Architectural tools can be used in a genial way to create a sense of greater spaciousness: this small wrap-around veranda project was built onto an existing house with a tight garden. Light was an important factor as the house already had quite a dark interior. Skylights in the form of corrugated polycarbonate sheeting were included near the walls to allow light to stream into the house. The widely-spaced veranda posts increase the feeling of spaciousness and the garden now feels much bigger because of the addition of this outdoor-living space even though the verandah now occupies a substantial area of the garden.
